Heavy Duty Hydraulic Cylinders

Heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders have thick, high-strength barrels and larger piston rods, driven by hydraulic pressure, the piston rod extends and retracts to produce pushing force ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands of tons, powering heavy-duty operations such as lifting, pressing and pulling. They’re widely used in metallurgical equipment, mining machinery, and water conservancy projects under heavy loads.

The barrel is made from cold-rolled precision seamless steel pipe, with uniform wall thickness and no seams, it handles high pressure well and won’t deform under impact. We select different piston-rod materials for different working conditions. 45# steel is used for general conditions, while 40Cr alloy steel is adopted for heavy-load, and go through quenching and high-temperature tempering treatment, the material gets stronger and can handle repeated shocks, keeping the cylinder running reliably.

We use combined fine-boring and roller-burnishing process as well as double-sided groove welding technology to ensure reliable sealing and firm welding of hydraulic cylinders. Custom designs are available based on your drawings.

Your Trustworthy Heavy Duty Hydraulic Cylinder Manufacturer

Heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders can deliver pushing and pulling forces from hundreds to thousands of tons, they can withstand high-pressure impacts and fluctuating loads, with working pressures up to over 420 bar. Face the complex working conditions, these cylinders must be custom-designed for actual application requirements.

We have rich experience manufacturing and servicing heavy-duty cylinders, and have long supplied products for metallurgy, mining and other industries. We work out the best design for different conditions. For example, in environments with alternating high and low temperatures, we fit combined seal rings together with wear-resistant guide rings. The seals stay well-fitted on temperature changes and reduce leakage risks caused by hot-cold cycles.

We also offer custom cylinders based on your drawings and actual working conditions. We'll do a professional technical review and suggest improvements if needed, to give you reliable cylinder.

Applications of Heavy Duty Hydraulic Cylinders

Steel Mill Rolling Mills

Heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders are used in steel mill rolling mills. They rely on high-pressure oil to extend and retract the piston rod, pushing against the roll bearing chocks to adjust the roll gap, and output large force to roll steel down to a required thickness. Rolling mill operations create heavy impact loads, heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders are designed with reinforced piston rods and cylinder barrels to withstand strong reverse impact forces, preventing bending and fatigue cracking of the components.

Hydraulic Presses

Heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders are also used in hydraulic press machines. The upper cylinder drives the slide block down to press and shape workpieces. The lower cylinder pushes finished workpieces out of the mold. Heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders can deliver rated pressure at any position throughout the entire stroke. This makes them well-suited for operations with big force changes across different processing stages, and delivers more consistent workpiece forming results.

Offshore Cranes

On marine cranes, various heavy cylinders use hydraulic power to move the piston rods extend and retract, they control the lifting and lowering of the boom, adjust boom length, and lock the slewing mechanism, so heavy loads can be lifted and moved at sea. Ocean environments have heavy salt-fog corrosion, the piston rods get a thick hard-chrome coating, and the cylinder bodies are painted with several layers of heavy-duty anti-corrosion paint. That way they can stand up to seawater and reduce rusting.

Waste Recycling Balers

Heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders are widely used in the waste recycling and baling industry, baling machines rely on heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders to power massive pressure to squeeze materials, with pressure held at the end to compact loose scrap into tight bales. These cylinders have dust scrapers and multiple seals, they scrape off metal chips and dust, keep contaminants out of the cylinder, and lower wear on the seals and inner cylinder barrel wall.

Hydroelectric Dam Gate Hoists

At hydropower stations, the gates are operated by heavy hydraulic cylinders, these cylinders are mounted between the pier brackets and the gate lifting arms, through the piston rods extend and retract, they move the gates to rotate up or down, opening and closing them to control the water flow. Working in water mixed with sediment, the piston rods are treated with ceramic coating, this gives them a harder surface that resists wear from the sand, helping the equipment last longer.

Multi‑unit hydraulic jacks for bridge bearing replacement

Bridge Launching Gantries and Heavy Lifting Systems

Heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders are used in large-scale lifting equipment. For bridge jack-up work, the hydraulic system controls several cylinders to lift the girder up at the same time for bearing replacement or space reconstruction. These cylinders have large bores and big pistons, which give them a huge pushing force, when multiple cylinders work in same time, they can provide thrust up to ten thousand tons, can help the bridge structure rais steadily.

Piston Rod Pitting and Corrosion Due to Coating Porosity

The piston rod is the only moving part exposed on a cylinder, poor chrome-plating quality can cause tiny invisible pinholes in the coating. In a damp, corrosive environment, moisture and corrosive agents can get through those pinholes and reach the base metal, that will cause rust expands and makes the chrome plating peel off. Finally, the rough surface damages the seals and causes leaks.

To solve this problem, we apply pre-plating polishing and copper-stripping treatment. Before hard chrome plating, we first deposit a 5-8μm copper layer and then remove it completely. The copper fills in tiny pits and removes impurities. This makes the surface much smoother and tighter. As a result, pinholes in the hard-chrome layer are greatly reduced, fundamentally lowering the risk of internal corrosion and oil leaks.

Seal Extrusion and Leakage Under High-Pressure Peaks

When the cylinder starts, stops, changes direction, or the load suddenly shifts, pressure spikes can shoot far above the rated working pressure. This high pressure can force the seals into the clearance gaps, causing extrusion damage. Repeated squeezing and snapping back can break down the seals and lead to internal leakage. In severe cases, the seals can fail completely, and the cylinder stops working.

To solve this, we fit high-strength back-up rings to separate seals from fitting gaps and prevent seals from being squeezed out under high pressure, which avoids extrusion damage from the start. We also recommend adding external cushioning devices to reduce the impact of pressure spikes. These multiple layers of protection prevent seal extrusion, extending seal life.

Manufacturing Tolerances in Large-Diameter Long-Stroke Tubes

Large-bore, long-stroke cylinder tubes tend to deform after heat treatment. During deep-hole boring, the tool bar has a long overhang. Under cutting forces, it can shift off-track. This results in inner bores with poor straightness or roundness, which may damage the piston rod and hurt the cylinder's sealing.

For extra-large cylinders, we use a combined process of rough boring, semi-finish boring, and then burnishing. we cut away the excess material to correct the bore's roundness and straightness. Then we use cold rolling to smooth the inner wall, which improves any tiny machining deviations. This effectively controls straightness and roundness errors in long cylinder bores and boosts machining precision.
