Dump Trailer Hydraulic Cylinder
Dump trailer cylinders power farm dump trailers, trailers and fertilizer spreaders to complete lifting movements. Operators only need to press a button to unload goods from the trailer bed. These cylinders mostly work in dusty, muddy conditions, so they require reliable sealing performance.
The piston rod is usually made of 45# seamless steel pipe with hard chrome plating. The chrome layer is 0.05–0.08 mm thick and has a hardness of 900–1000 HV, , which protects the rod from scratches caused by sand and mud. Seals are usually use NBR, PU, PTFE or POM. We can choose a seal combination based on your actual working conditions. For example, PU is wear-resistant and handles high pressure well, so we use it in harsh conditions with a lot of mud, sand, and heavy-load impacts.
We use deep hole boring for the cylinder barrel. The inner hole tolerance reaches H9. This makes the seals fit evenly and reduces oil leakage. We can provide technical support and help choose materials based on your equipment.

Dump Trailer Hydraulic Cylinder Features
Single-stage lifting cylinder
A single-stage lift cylinder is one type of dump trailer cylinder. They have a simple design with just one barrel. These cylinders work well for small dump trailers with light loads and short strokes that do not require high lifting force. They are easy to maintain and come at a lower cost.

Multi-stage telescopic lifting cylinder
A multi-stage telescopic lift cylinder is a type of dump trailer cylinder. It's made up of several sleeves. When retracted, it's short overall and doesn't stick out from the frame, so it gives a long stroke on compact chassis’s trailers. It's mostly used on light, compact dump trailers.

Front-mounted lifting cylinder
A front-mounted lift cylinder is a type of dump trailer cylinder. It’s mounted at the front of the dump body and lifts the trailer body directly. It can give strong, steady lifting force. It’s suitable for heavy-duty dump trailers and is often used on construction sites and other tough unloading jobs.

Applications of Dump Trailer Hydraulic Cylinder

Farm Dump Trailer Lifting
Dump trailer cylinders are used in the lifting equipment of agricultural dump trailers. High-pressure oil pushes the piston rod out. The piston rod is hinged to the trailer bed frame, so it can lift the bed to unload goods. Dump trailer cylinders produce great pushing force and can lift the bed even when fully loaded.

Grain Transfer Trailer Pressure Holding
Dump trailer hydraulic cylinders are also used for pressure holding and positioning in grain transfer trailers. After the trailer bed is lifted to the unloading angle, a hydraulic lock seals both chambers of the cylinder. This locks the piston rod in place, keeps the bed steadily tilted, and stops dropping on its own during grain unloading.

Small Tipper Trailer Lowering
Dump trailer cylinders are used in small tipper trailer lowering. The piston rod retracts under the weight of the bed, bringing the bed back down to the travel position. The cylinder is fitted with a buffer structure. This keeps the box lowering smoothly and prevents it from hitting the frame.

Long Bed Trailer Multi-stage Extension
The dump trailer cylinder is used in the multi-stage extension system for long-bed trailers. High-pressure oil flows into the working chamber to push out the piston rod, This makes the sleeves extend in order, giving a very long lifting stroke. The cylinder is compact, so it can be installed directly even in tight spaces, and it won’t affect the other parts.

Compact Chassis Trailer Multi-stage Retraction
Dump trailer cylinders are used for multi-stage retraction on compact-chassis trailers. The cylinder is hinged between the frame and the trailer bed. After unloading, the directional valve switches to the return position, so the sleeves retract in order. When fully retracted, the cylinder doesn’t stick out below. This lets small dump trailers still reach enough lifting angle for unloading.

Side-tip Trailer Lifting
Dump trailer cylinders are used in the side lifting system for side-tipping trailers. One end of the cylinder is hinged to the frame, and the other end connects to the side platform. As the piston rod extends, it pushes the tipping platform to rotate around one side, tilting the trailer bed sideways for side unloading. This material has a tensile strength of at least 750 MPa, so the cylinder has strong resistance to off-center loads and works well under uneven loads.
Insufficient Pressure Holding Causes Trailer Bed Sinking
When the trailer bed is raised to the unloading angle, it can’t stay in place when the pressure is cut off. This is caused by internal leakage from broken seals. High-pressure oil slowly leaks into the low-pressure chamber, so less oil is left to hold the trailer bed up and the pressure drops. Under the trailer bed’s own weight, the piston rod slowly retracts, and the trailer bed sinks with it. As a result, the cargo can’t be unloaded.
The cylinder uses a combined seal design, with several seals working together. The main seal blocks high-pressure oil and keeps it from leaking from the high-pressure chamber into the low-pressure chamber. This reduces internal leakage and helps the trailer bed stay steady at the unloading angle for a long time. And use dust ring keeps out dirt and dust, so things won’t scratch the seals and the seals last longer.

Abnormal Lifting Due to Mismatched System Pressure
When the cylinder lifts the trailer bed, it may move slowly with weak power, or fail to lift under heavy loads. This happens because the system working pressure and the working conditions were not matched when the choose the cylinder. As a result, the hydraulic pump, pipelines and cylinder thrust will work out of balance, and reduce unloading efficiency.
To solve this issue, we select the proper system working pressure based on the trailer load weight and operation frequency at the selection stage. For light-load trailers, we use 16 MPa system pressure. For heavy-load or high-frequency operation trailers, we use 20 MPa. This ensures the lifting force from the cylinder meets load requirements and prevents slow lifting or failure to raise heavily loaded trailer beds.
