Lift gate hydraulic cylinders are fitted on vehicle tail lifts, and provide power to vehicle tail lifts. Through hydraulic pressure drives the tailgate to lift, lower and tilt. They are widely used in logistics, cold chain transport and sanitation industries.

The cylinder barrel is made of 42CrMo alloy steel. It goes through quenching and high-temperature tempering, make it hardness HRC28~36. This gives it strong impact resistance and helps it handle the repeated load changes of tail lifts. We select seals based on working conditions, for normal box trucks at room temperature, we use NBR. Refrigerated trucks need to drive into cold storage to pick up goods. After loading, they return to a normal-temperature environment. This hot and cool shift causes condensation, and it will wets the seals, so we use PTFE combined seals that don't absorb water. It can avoid moisture impact and keep the seal stable.

Power Lift And Power Lower

Lift-gate hydraulic cylinders are used in power-up and power-down equipment. Through hydraulic oil enters the cap end chamber to extend or retract the piston rod, lifting and lowering the platform. The cylinder has a counterbalance valve fitted inside, It stops the lift-gate from dropping rapidly under its own weight, controls the lowering speed and prevents heavy impact.

Actuation Direction Reversal

Lift-gate hydraulic cylinders are also used in flip-type tailgate equipment. By changing the port connections and cylinder mounting direction, can change the oil feed logic to the rod chamber. This lets the cylinder either lift or lower when it extends, making it good fit for lift-gates with limited space. This design bring more flexibility and lifting space. When they need reverse thrust, it don’t need to develop new cylinder, this reduce costs.

Multi-Cylinder Synchronous Lifting

Lift-gate hydraulic cylinders are used in mid-position holding equipment, through the piston rod extends to lift the platform to a certain height, when oil flow stops, the lock valve seals oil inside the cylinder to hold the platform at any position. The lock valve is made of QT500 high-strength ductile iron. It has excellent toughness and vibration resistance. It can hold the locking pressure steady, and keeps the platform from dropping.

Gravity Lower with Jerks and Impact

When a lift gate lowers by its own weight, it easy appear descending speed increase and hit the ground hard. This happens because the lowering speed is controlled by a throttle hole. If the hole is too big, it can't hold back the increasing force of the gate's own weight. Fast lowering creates sudden high pressure, which damages the cylinder seals.

We design the throttling setup based on the lift gate’s angle and load center, and also adjust it to actual working conditions. If the platform angle changes a lot, we will recommend an adjustable throttle valve to handle different loads. This keeps the tailgate lowering at a steady speed, stops accelerating fall and hard impact to protect the cylinder from damage.

Uneven Extension of Dual Cylinders Causes Platform Tilt

Some equipment needs two cylinders to work together. If the two cylinders differ in internal leakage, starting force and friction, one piston will extend slower than the other. The different speed will cause Platform tilt. A tilted platform puts twisting force on the pins and mounting base. This can crack the welds and break the cylinder lugs.

When we manufacture twin cylinders for lift gate, both cylinders use the same drawing and the same batch of seals. We control their internal leakage, starting force and friction consistent. We also set the port direction based on the actual pipe layout to prevent uneven loading on the two cylinders. This ensures two cylinders push in sync. so the lift-gate won't go faster on one side, and the platform won't tilt or jam. so the lift-gate won't go faster on one side, and the platform won't tilt or jam.

Platform Sinking at Mid-Stop Position

When the lift gate rises to a certain height, the platform will slowly drop and won't stay there, heavier loads make the sinking more obvious. In serious cases, the lift gate keeps falling and cargo slides off, creating safety risks. That is because piston seal occur leaks, oil in the high-pressure chamber leaks through the seal into the low-pressure chamber. so the pressure holding the platform drops and the lift gate sinks.

To solve this, we use a combination of Gland ring and a support ring. The Gland ring is the main seal that holds the oil, and the support ring shares the side load. We also precision-hone the cylinder bore to reduce surface roughness and slow down seal wear, this reduces seal wear. So the lift gate can stay stable at any stop height and will not sink.
